What Happens If Your KITAS Lapses orIs Misused?

Living the permanent dream in Indonesia requires staying on top of your legal residency. The foundation for legal residency in Bali, or Indonesia, is KITAS, the Limited Stay Permit Card, which is now also known as ITAS (its digital version). KITAS holders need to understand that their initial permit has a limited duration. To continue staying, studying, or working in Bali means that they need to understand and complete the Bali KITAS renewal process in order to extend their KITAS and avoid unexpected deportation or hefty fines.
Even though many aspects of the Indonesian immigration have been streamlined via online portals as of 2026, there are some physical requirements for local reporting that still remain active and vital. So, here’s a detailed and comprehensive guide on how to extend Bali KITASand ensure your extended stay in Indonesia remains legal, hassle-free, and stress-free.

Understanding the Bali KITAS Renewal Process

Renewing and extending the KITAS essentially re-evaluates the eligibility of foreign nationals holding a KITAS to stay in Bali, or Indonesia for that matter. Whether one holds a Retirement, Spouse, Investor, or Working KITAS, they need to initiate the extension process at least 30 to 60 days before their current stay permit expires. Waiting until right the last minute could prove to be costly, besides being a huge legal hassle; once their KITAS expires, foreigners cannot extend it and need to leave the country immediately, or face an overstay fine of IDR 1,000,000 daily.
Here’s an overview of the process foreign nationals holding the KITAS can expect when it comes to renewing their limited residency permits:

  • 1. Know their KITAS expiry date and requirements for renewal
  • 2. Prepare their documents
  • 3. Submit the documents online and attend the biometrics appointment

Step 1: Know your KITAS expiry dates and requirements for renewal

Every KITAS has a specific validity period (read more about this in details in From Visitor to Resident Bali Visa vs. KITAS article). For instance, some KITAS might be valid for a few months, while others might get KITAS with a validity of several years. That being said, the validity depends on the applicant’s circumstances and their visa category.
To begin with, it’s extremely important for KITAS holders to be aware of when their KITAS is expiring in order to avoid any issues related to overstaying. Ideally, KITAS holders need to initiate their Indonesia KITAS extension process well in time before your current KITAS expiration date.
More importantly, applicants need to remember that extending most of the KITAS types requires applicants to be physically present in Indonesia during the KITAS renewal and extension process. Additionally, the renewal needs to be processed within 1-3 months before their KITAS expires.
Last but not least, there are certain documents you need to get and processes that need to be done before applicants start the process of extending their KITAS.

  • Get an STM (Surat Tanda Melapor): As soon as they receive their initial KITAS, KITAS holders need to obtain a police report certificate from their local police station. It is also an important document for extending the KITAS later.
  • Visit to the Banjar: They then need to visit the local community council in Bali, where they need to submit the STM to get the SKTT (proof of residence or a Domicile Letter). This letter is also a non-negotiable part of the KITAS extension process.
  • Immigration Account: Usually, applicants will need access to their sponsor’s online immigration account for KITAS extension, especially if they handled it themselves earlier or if they’re changing agencies. For investors, this refers to the PT PMA company account.

Step 2: Prepare the documents

To extend Bali Limited Stay Permit status, KITAS holders will need to gather their updated documents, as well as those of their sponsor. Basically, you must show all the documents required during the initial application process, but updated (if required).
Individual KITAS holders are required to have their recent photographs, their current KITAS/ITAS that’s expiring, proof of address or domicile (SKTT – Temporary Residential Registration), and their original passport with a validity of 18 at the minimum. Individuals also need additional documents for specific KITAS types, such as a curriculum vitae (CV) for Working KITAS and updated personal bank statements showing balance amounting to USD 2,000 or a minimum equivalent amount for several others.
Please note that the popular Remote Worker KITAS (E33G) is valid for a single year and is not renewable. Foreign nationals need to close their current KITAS before it expires, leave Indonesia, and apply for a new KITAS to continue their stay in Indonesia.

Step 3: Online Submission And Biometrics

Once KITAS holders have their documents ready and wish to go submit the extension application themselves may visit the Official Indonesia Immigration Platform https://www.evisa.imigrasi.go.id, which is the same platform used for tourists to obtain their e-VOA (e-Visa on Arrival). After logging into the e-visa portal with their credentials, they need to select “Extend my visa” to start the application for extending their KITAS. Applicants need to follow the instructions onscreen while having their passport ready by their side. Then need to pay the renewal fees online and submit their registration.
After their online registration is submitted, applicants will receive a biometrics appointment at their nearest immigration office in Bali within two working days (Bali has three main immigration offices at Singaraja, Denpasar, and Ngurah Rai). During the biometrics and documentation verification appointment, applicants might be asked about their accommodation in Bali, onward travel plans, and intentions and reasons for staying in Indonesia before their new digital photo and fingerprints are taken.
Finally, after the biometrics appointment is done with, the process usually takes around 7 to 10 working days for the system to process and issue the new, extended electronic KITAS (ITAS).

Crucial KITAS Compliance Tips

Staying legally in Bali involves more than simply having your passport updated with a stamp or a sticker. It’s best to keep these KITAS compliance tips in mind in order to ensure a smooth renewal every year:

  • Update Address Changes: Did you move from Ubud to Canggu or anywhere else in Indonesia? KITAS holders need to report and update their changed address to the immigration office within 30 days. If they don’t do so, then it could result in causing major issues when it comes to their next KITAS renewal.
  • Tax Obligations: For those who are on an Investor or Working KITAS, they need to ensure that their NPWP (Tax ID) is active and that their annual taxes have been filed. These two are now important prerequisites for many types of KITAS extensions.
  • No “Side Hustles”: Since a KITAS is tied strictly to a specific job description or a sponsor, KITAS holders cannot work outside the scope of what their permit allows. It’s also the quickest way to get blacklisted and not get a KITAS extension going ahead.
  • The Bridging Visa: Are you changing your type of KITAS, such as Work to Spousal visa? Then the best thing to do is look into the Bridging Visa. A Bridging Visa does just what its name says – it allows KITAS holders to stay in Bali while their status changes without them having to exit and enter the country or undergo any other “visa run” hassles.

The Bali KITAS renewal process is as straightforward as it can get, even if it’s extremely detailed, and navigating it doesn’t necessarily need to be a headache. If one starts early and maintains all their documents and local compliances, then they can focus on enjoying a hassle-free process of KITAS extension and actually enjoy living in and experiencing Bali rather than worrying about paperwork.
