This specific visa is a type of limited stay visa designed for a foreign national to join their family in Indonesia. It can be issued for a period of six months up to two years. However, as Achmad Nur Saleh from the Directorate General of Immigration explains, simply having a family member in Indonesia isn’t enough. There are very specific eligibility criteria you must meet.
Who is Eligible for the Family Reunification Visa?
The regulations are precise and are outlined in the Minister of Law and Human Rights Decree Number M.HH-3 GR.01.01 of 2022. You generally fall into one of two categories:
- Spouse Category
The spouse category is for you if you are married to:
- An Indonesian citizen (WNI). To prove this, you’ll need a marriage certificate or a marriage book. If it’s not in Indonesian or English, you’ll need an official translation from a sworn translator. If you got married abroad, you’ll also need a marriage reporting certificate from an Indonesian representative office.
- A foreign national who already holds a limited stay permit (ITAS) or a permanent stay permit (ITAP).
- Child Category
The child category is for you if you are a child:
- From a legal marriage between a foreign national and an Indonesian citizen.
- Under the legal guardianship of a foreign national who is legally married to an Indonesian citizen. You must be under 18 and unmarried.
- Who is joining parents who both hold an ITAS or ITAP. This applies to children under 18 and unmarried from a legal marriage of foreign nationals.
- Of an Indonesian citizen father and/or mother.
What Documents Do You Need?
Applying for a Family Reunification Visa requires a comprehensive set of documents to ensure a smooth process. You’ll need to prepare:
- An application letter.
- A sponsorship letter from your family member in Indonesia.
- A copy of your passport.
- Proof of funds, typically a bank statement showing a minimum balance of USD 2,000.
- For the spouse category: A translated marriage certificate (if not in Indonesian or English) and a marriage reporting certificate (if married abroad).
- For the child category: A translated birth certificate (if not in Indonesian or English).
- For those joining an ITAS/ITAP holder: A copy of the parent’s or spouse’s stay permit.
The Critical Next Step: Converting Your Visa to a Stay Permit
This is the most common pitfall we see with foreigners who are new to the process. It’s crucial to understand that the Family Reunification Visa (VITAS) is simply your entry ticket. It is not your stay permit.
Once you enter Indonesia with your VITAS, you have a strict 30-day window to process your actual Limited Stay Permit (ITAS). As Achmad Nur Saleh warns, failing to do this will void your visa, and you will be required to leave the country. This isn’t a recommendation, it’s a strict requirement.
