Bali is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning beaches, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant culture. With so much to see and explore, many visitors choose to rent a car or scooter to navigate the island’s roads. But the questions arise: Do I need a license to drive a car or scooter in Bali? Can I rent a motorbike or car if I don’t have a driver’s license? What happens if I drive without a driver’s license? Is it possible to get a license directly in Bali?

We will try to answer in detail all questions about driving licenses in Bali. Let’s start from the first question.

Are Driver's Licenses Required In Bali?

The short answer is YES. According to Indonesian law, foreign visitors are required to have an international driver’s license to drive a car or ride a motorbike in Bali. At the same time, category A is required for driving a motorbike, and category B is required for driving a car.

However, the reality is that many tourists choose to ignore this requirement. This is not difficult to do, given the fact that when renting a car or motorbike in Bali, a driver’s license is not asked. So, the answer to the second question “Can I rent a motorbike or car if I don’t have a driver’s license?” is YES, you can.

Nevertheless, while driving without a license may be common among tourists, it’s important to understand the potential consequences. If you’re caught driving without a license, you may face fines and even impounding of the vehicle. In addition, if you’re involved in an accident and don’t have a license, your insurance may not cover the damages or injuries.

It’s also worth noting that driving in Bali can be challenging, especially for inexperienced drivers. The roads can be narrow and winding, and traffic can be chaotic. Scooter accidents are common, and it’s essential to wear a helmet and exercise caution while driving.

Obtaining an international driver’s license is a straightforward process that can be done before you leave for Bali. Most countries offer international driver’s licenses through their respective automobile associations or licensing authorities.

Can Foreigners Get Driver’s License In Indonesia?
