Last week, the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration announced an update of visa policy. Foreigners who frequently travel to Bali and throughout Indonesia for tourism or business purposes will be able to obtain a 5-year multiple-entry visa D1 for tourism purposes and D2 for business visits from January 2024.

Silmy Karim, the head of Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration, assumed his position earlier this year and promptly initiated reforms in immigration systems nationwide.

Karim consistently emphasizes his vision of establishing a top-notch immigration service that effectively serves both Indonesian citizens and foreigners, prioritizing efficiency and accessibility.

He has already implemented the new golden visa policy and the second home visa policy, spearheading the digitalization of all immigration services. Over time, this shift is expected to significantly impact tourists heading to Bali.

Currently, Karim and his team have announced the new D1 and D2 visa, allowing holders to stay of up to 60 days per visit, with no restrictions on the number of entries/exits within a 60-day period. Each new 60-day stay begins upon arrival in Indonesia.

For consecutive 60-day periods, visa holders must exit Indonesia for at least 24 hours before returning.

This multiple-entry visa is valid for five years, resembling the D212 Multiple Entry Visa, although the latter was only valid for one year.

In discussions with reporters, Karim provided additional insights into how the visa will benefit tourists, businesses, and Indonesia as a whole.

He clarified that the D1 and D2 visas are essentially the same, with the D1 issued for social and tourism purposes, and the D2 for applicants predominantly engaged in business activities such as conferences and events.

Karim expressed optimism, stating, “We believe that this new visa policy, coupled with the upcoming launch of online visa applications in early 2023, will attract more foreign nationals to visit Indonesia.”

He concluded, “The Directorate General of Immigration is striving to simplify the online Indonesian visa application process for foreigners.”

There is optimism that the new D1 and D2 visas will draw in more high-quality tourists, particularly to Indonesia’s popular destination, Bali.
