In a significant development, President Joko Widodo of Indonesia declared the official cancellation of the COVID-19 pandemic status in the country on June 21, 2023. After more than three years of relentless efforts in combating the virus, the Indonesian government has made the decision to transition into an endemic phase. This decision comes as daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 have dwindled to near-zero, with 99 percent of the population already possessing antibodies against the virus.

President Joko Widodo, affectionately known as Jokowi, expressed his satisfaction with the nation’s progress in battling the pandemic. In his statement, he announced the revocation of the pandemic status, signifying a pivotal shift in Indonesia’s fight against the virus. The move was based on the diminishing number of daily confirmed cases, indicating that the country has successfully suppressed the transmission of COVID-19.

With the cancellation of the pandemic status, Indonesia is now entering an endemic phase. Jokowi emphasized that while the situation has significantly improved, caution should still be exercised. He urged the public to maintain a healthy lifestyle and adhere to all sanitary norms, ensuring the continued well-being of the population. This approach aims to prevent any potential resurgence of the virus and sustain the positive progress achieved thus far.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also acknowledged Indonesia’s remarkable achievements in combating the pandemic. As a result, the status of a public health emergency has been lifted, further validating the country’s successful efforts in curbing the spread of COVID-19. This recognition highlights Indonesia’s commitment to international collaboration and serves as an inspiration for other nations in their own fight against the virus.

President Jokowi expressed optimism regarding the positive impact of this decision on Indonesia’s national economy. With the lifting of all COVID-related restrictions since June 9, 2023, the country aims to restore normalcy and stimulate economic growth. By eliminating the need for vaccination certificates for domestic and international travel, Indonesia seeks to revitalize its tourism sector and encourage business activities. This transition into an endemic phase is expected to bring about a renewed sense of confidence and propel the nation’s economic development.
